Carla Novinger married William D. Howey, an acting coach, on October 11, 1975, in Bexar County, Texas. They remained married until August 31, 2021, when William died due to dementia. During their 46-year marriage, they were blessed with three children Tammy Howey, Bret, and Steve Howey.
After her husband’s death, Carla Novinger has not remarried as she focuses on her career as an acting coach; however, she misses him.

After primary, Carla Novinger attended Cherry Creek High School in Englewood and graduated in 1968. It is unknown which college she attended, but she trained to become an acting coach. Upon getting married to William Howey, they founded the Howey Acting Studio, a drama school based in Mesa, Arizona where she has taught for over 40 years.
Many actors, including her son Steve Howey, have gone through her drama school. She was very instrumental in helping her son become who he is today. Steve testified how his parents taught and ensured he became a successful actor.

Steve Howey’s other film roles include Wrong Cops, Conception, Bride Wars, Supercross, See You in Valhalla, In Your Eyes, Unleashed, and Day Shift, where he portrayed Mike Nazarian appearing alongside Jamie Foxx. From 2011, Carla’s son started appearing on Shameless as a regular, playing the role until the show ended in 2021.
Steve also appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Workaholics. From March 1, 2023, Carla’s son appears as Harry Tasker in the series True Lies opposite Ginger Gonzaga.
