Liliana Carella Rzeznik was born on December 22, 2016, in Westfield, New Jersey to the guitarist, John Rzeznik, and Melina. John Joseph Theodore Rzeznik was born on December 5, 1965, in Buffalo, New York, to Edith (nee Pomeroy) and Joseph Rzeznik, a bar proprietor and postal clerk. He is the youngest of five children, and has Polish (father) and English and German (mother) ancestry. From early on in his life, John found that his parents were constantly arguing due to his father’s drinking problem.

John’s father died at the age of 53 on February 2, 1981, from a diabetic coma when John was 15 years old. On October 26, 1982, his mother died at the age of 51 from a sudden heart attack in the family’s living room. Having lost both of his parents, he was brought up by his four older sisters, Phyllis, Fran, Gladys, and Kate, with help from their cousin, John Guljas. He paid for his apartment using Social Security Survivor Benefit checks.

During this time and while attending high school John’s friend introduced him to a hobby that he would stick to for the rest of his life, playing the guitar. He met former model Laurie Farinacci in 1990, married her in 1993 but divorced in 2003. He started dating Melina Gallo in 2005 and married her in Malibu, California, on July 26, 2013. The couple is blessed with one daughter, Liliana.

He is best known as the guitarist and frontman of the rock band Goo Goo Dolls, with whom he has recorded 14 studio albums.

In 1985, John formed the band that became the Goo Goo Dolls with Robby Takac.
