Jerry Lee Lewis was born on the 29th of September in the year 1935. His parents were Elmo Kidd Lewis Snr. And Mary Mamie Herron Lewis. He grew up in Louisiana with his farming family who wasn’t doing great financially.
He started playing piano with two of his cousins when he was young, both of these cousins Jimmy Swaggart and Mickey Gilley became very successful in their careers. One being a televangelist and the other becoming a popular country music singer.
In November of 1949 on the 19th to be exact, Jerry Lee had his first public performance. He played at a car dealership in Ferriday with a country and western band.
In 1956 in November, he traveled to Tennessee to a town called Memphis for an audition at Sun Records. In December of that same year, Jerry Lee Lewis started recording as a solo artist for Sun Records. He was also a session musician playing the piano on many other Sun Records artists’ albums.
